If you’re looking for something to do this weekend in Georgina, the Butter Tart Festival will be going on at the Ice Palace on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. The event is for a great cause, as proceeds will be going to the Peaceful Hearts Georgina Foundation which runs programs for children, youth, and young adults with special needs in our community. The event won’t just be all about butter tarts, as there will be all kinds of vendors on hand. Our very own Dan Pollard will also be there from 11am to 2pm. If you want more information on the event or on the Peaceful Hearts Foundation, you can visit peacefulhearts.ca.
Ontario Education Minister Jill Dunlop is calling on the federal government to deliver more money so that Ontario can properly run the national $10 a day child care program beyond the life of the deal. In a letter Dunlop wrote to her federal counterpart, she says that the program is in jeopardy without more funding. So far, the province has used the federal funding to cut costs in half for parents, with more reductions coming in January. The concern now is that there is very little money left to help child care operators with things like adding space or implementing a wage grid for early childhood educators.
Canada will be seeing fewer immigrants over the next few years after the Liberal government has faced criticism when it comes to increased immigration. The announcement was made yesterday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that his government’s immigration targets will be slashed down from 500,000 to 395,000 in 2025, 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027. At his press conference, the Prime Minister said that by slashing the immigration targets along with other policy changes, the hope is to make Canada’s immigration system stronger.
