Georgina residents raise safety concerns over new bike lanes, Ontario college faculty vote 79% for strike action, and frozen waffles recalled for Listeria.

Transcript

Georgina residents are raising concerns about the safety of new bike lanes that were installed along Highway 48. Residents took to social media calling the new lanes a death trap. One of the biggest concerns is that the lane crosses Morning Glory Public School which may encourage students to bike to and from school along a busy provincial highway. Georgina residents are also upset that the community had no input on the project. According to a spokesperson from local MPP Caroline Mulrooney’s office, the lanes are part of the province’s plan to upgrade the highway and are completely safe. Unionized faculty workers at Ontario’s 24 public colleges have voted 79% in favour of strike action. The Ontario Public Service Employees Union had over 75% of its members take part in the vote which made it the biggest college faculty vote in a generation. The union represents over 15,000 workers and includes instructors, librarians and counsellors. The union has only met with the College Employer Council twice since their contract expired on October 1st, but they do remain confident that a new deal can be reached. One of the biggest issues that the union has brought to the bargaining table is the concern for its members workload. There is no set date as to when a strike would begin if a new contract cannot be agreed upon.

A frozen waffle recall has been issued in Canada and the United States because of possible listeria. Treehouse Foods, which is a multinational food processing company, announced the recall on Friday. Waffle brands that are affected include Walmart’s Great Value brand, Selection, which is sold at Metro and Food Basics, Sobe Inc’s Compliment brand and Loblaw’s No Name brand. Treehouse Foods is advising customers to throw out any of the recalled products.
