Georgina will be one of four communities that will host the Economic Developers Council of Ontario in 2025. Every year the EDCO puts out a call looking for communities to host their event and next year Georgina will be joined by Sudbury, Rideau Lakes and Brantford. The date and location of the event in town is still unknown, but Mayor Margaret Quirk did say that this is a great opportunity for the community to highlight its economic development.
Hosting the corporate event also means a bump in the local economy as the town gets put on display for those that attend the conference. Ontario’s teacher shortage could get worse before it gets better, according to the Ministry of Education. The retirement rate among teachers is climbing, as is the number of students enrolling in school in Ontario. School boards all over the province continue to struggle not only to recruit qualified teachers but to retain their services as well, particularly when it comes to French teachers.
The gap also continues to grow between the number of teachers needed in Ontario and those that are available. That gap is expected to grow by 2027. After surviving two confidence votes in the last two weeks, the federal government is staring down a third vote. That vote was supposed to happen yesterday, but has been postponed as the Liberals continue to face pressure from the Bloc Quebecois. This confidence vote is based around the changes to the capital gains tax that the federal government made in June.
The Liberals now must put forward a motion to introduce legislation and formalize the change. There is no set date for this vote. However, the Bloc Quebecois did give the federal government a list of demands to be met by the end of the month, or the Bloc will begin the process of taking down the federal government
