The township of Uxbridge is marking Fire Prevention Week with a focus on lithium-ion battery safety, a growing concern as these batteries become common in household devices. Residents are being encouraged to take care when buying, charging and recycling batteries to help reduce the risk of fires in their homes. The township also partnered with Charged for life .ca to share more safe charging tips for everything from e-cigarettes to electric vehicles.
If you have some non-rechargeable batteries you are also in luck. Until October 9 Durham residents can place used household batteries in a clear, sealed plastic bag on top of their closed Green Bin. Make sure they are kept dry and cool. Batteries can also be dropped off for free year-round at Durham Region waste facilities.
The Ballantrae Sports Dome is facing another delay, with construction now expected to start next spring and the opening pushed to the 2027-28 winter season. The large indoor sports facility is planned to include soccer, pickleball, basketball and other activities, but some local residents are raising questions about its size and impact on the community. Despite the latest delay and concerns, the Town of Stouffville says it plans to see the project through.
