A two-year-old child suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being bitten by a coyote at Vanier Park on Sunday evening, according to Durham Regional Police. Police say the attack was unprovoked and happened while the child was in the playground, before the child’s guardian and several bystanders scared the animal away. Later that night, officers responded to a separate coyote sighting in Whitby, where the animal was located and removed without any reported injuries.

During the busy Canada Day week, the Ontario Provincial Police increased patrols on roads, trails and waterways to help keep communities safe. According to preliminary data, officers laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges, with speeding accounting for the largest share, along with hundreds of charges for impaired, stunt and distracted driving, as well as seatbelt and other safety violations. The OPP thanked drivers and passengers who made safety a priority and reminded everyone that responsible choices can help prevent avoidable tragedies throughout the summer.

The federal government has selected German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems or TKMS, as its preferred supplier to build a new fleet of 12 submarines for the Royal Canadian Navy. The government will now begin contract negotiations, with a deal expected next year, while the project is expected to become the largest defence procurement in Canadian history. Officials say the new submarines will replace Canada’s aging Victoria-class fleet and strengthen the country’s naval capabilities for decades to come.
