Roads flooded, trees fell, and customers were left without power after another powerful storm rocked Ottawa on Wednesday afternoon. The damaging storm involved over 22 mm of rain on average, strong winds at times exceeding 100 km/h, and several thousands of customers who lost power at the peak of the extreme weather. Cleanup efforts are underway, although in the case of some, progress has gone backwards as they have still been cleaning up from the major storm that struck on July 1. This mainly includes more than 6000 who still have flooded basements from that storm.

Ottawa police are seeking information and tips after a Vanier shooting in the early hours of Wednesday. They said that they dispatched officers to the scene, a residence on Belisle Street, after reports of shots fired at around 1:30 am in the area. Ottawa paramedics said that, upon arrival, they treated one victim for a gunshot wound, who was later sent to hospital in serious but non life-threatening condition. The incident is believed to be targeted, although no one has yet been placed in custody.

US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will soon receive options following talks between federal trade officials that have aimed to be productive. Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette were in Washington on Wednesday to discuss trade dealings with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who called the meetings “good” and “cordial” following their discussions, and concluded that their findings would be tabled to the federal leaders as a series of possible “options”. These meetings have been increasingly underway as a means of mitigating the looming 50% tariff threat from Trump, on top of those already in place, and this time even affecting goods protected under the current CUSMA agreement. The new tariffs are set to take effect on August 19, if no agreement on negotiations will have been reached by then.
