Georgina is under a Yellow-level Heat Warning as hot weather continues across York Region this week. The Town is reminding residents to stay cool and hydrated by using cooling centres, visiting splash pads or spending time at local beaches and waterfront parks. Officials are also encouraging everyone to take extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses during the hot weather.

Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario turned the sky over York Region yellow and orange on July 15 and caused an orange-level air quality warning. Health officials are asking people to stay indoors when possible or avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially children, seniors and people with heart or lung conditions. Many parks were quieter than usual as residents noticed the smoky air, and conditions are expected to improve by Friday.

York Region Public Health is advising people not to swim at Claredon Beach Park, Riverview Park and Jackson’s Point Harbour/Bonnie Park after high levels of E. coli were found in the water. Swimming in water with high bacteria levels can make people sick and cause skin, eye and stomach problems. All other York Region beaches tested are currently safe for swimming.
