The Town of Georgina is reminding residents and visitors to help keep local beaches and waterfront parks clean and safe this summer. Visitors are encouraged to throw out their garbage, respect the natural environment, leave barbecues and cooking devices at home, and make sure they have a valid parking pass or pay-and-display ticket. The town says small actions can help keep Georgina’s lakeside parks welcoming for everyone.

Central York Fire Services has launched its 12th annual Stay Fire Smart campaign, with firefighters visiting homes in Newmarket and Aurora until Aug. 28 to promote fire safety. Crews will provide free smoke and carbon monoxide alarm checks, batteries and installations, while reminding residents to have working alarms and a home fire escape plan. The campaign has visited more than 100,000 homes since it began in 2013, and residents can also book a free home fire safety inspection.

York Regional Police has introduced its new Deputy Chief-Designate Ahmad Salhia, a longtime officer with a strong background in public service, community engagement and major investigations. Most recently, Salhia served as Superintendent of Executive Services after previously leading operations in Vaughan and King as commander of #4 District. In his new role, he will oversee the Community Safety Branch, including all five policing districts, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre and the Real Time Operations Centre.
