A Newmarket family and advocacy group, Red Coalition Inc. are calling for an independent review after alleging York Region Transit officers tackled and handcuffed a Black man with a disability over a $4 fare. The family says he had paid through the PRESTO app but was unable to explain his payment because of his disability, while York Region says the incident is under review and cannot comment further. The family and advocates are calling for accountability, policy changes and additional training for transit enforcement staff.
York Regional Police are warning residents about a telecommunications scam after arresting a 22-year-old Markham man. Police say suspects pose as phone company representatives, convince victims to order new devices and then trick them into sending the devices to the scammers. Police recovered about $40,000 worth of phones and tablets and believe there may be more victims across Canada.
The OPP says a 73-year-old pilot who went missing after leaving Oshawa Airport on August 14 has been found dead. Searchers located the plane and the pilot’s body submerged in Wolfe Lake in the Kawartha Lakes area. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the cause of the crash.
