Residents will have a chance to give broken household items a second life at the next Repair Café in Newmarket. The free event takes place Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newmarket Public Library, where volunteer fixers will help repair everything from bicycles and clothing to jewellery and small appliances. Space is limited, and residents are encouraged to register in advance at york.ca/RepairCafe.

The Township of Brock says the $10.2 million renovation of Sunderland Memorial Arena is expected to be substantially complete by the end of October. The project has expanded to include several upgrades, including improvements to the building’s structure, water and sewage systems, a new roof, and new heating and ventilation equipment. Staff will prepare the arena throughout November, with local user groups expected to return to the ice on Dec. 7 opening celebration details are expected to be announced soon.

Drivers in Bradford West Gwillimbury will soon see red-light cameras at some of the town’s busiest intersections. The province has approved the program, with eight cameras set to be installed at five intersections over the coming weeks before enforcement is expected to begin in September. Officials say the cameras are meant to improve safety by reducing red-light running, with fines starting at more than $300 for violations.
