During the busy Canada Day week, the Ontario Provincial Police increased patrols on roads, trails and waterways to help keep communities safe. According to preliminary data, officers laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges, with speeding accounting for the largest share, along with hundreds of charges for impaired, stunt and distracted driving, as well as seatbelt and other safety violations. The OPP thanked drivers and passengers who made safety a priority and reminded everyone that responsible choices can help prevent avoidable tragedies throughout the summer.

Cleanup is continuing in Aurora after Friday’s powerful storm caused widespread tree damage, power outages and road closures. Town crews are clearing fallen trees and repairing damage, while residents are reminded they are responsible for debris from trees on their own property and should avoid parks and trails in northwest Aurora until they reopen. The town says cleanup will take months, with some restoration work expected to continue into next year.
