The Township of Uxbridge is reminding residents that fireworks can only be set off on private property without a permit on June 30 and July 1 for Canada Day celebrations. The Township is also encouraging people to follow fireworks safety guidelines to help prevent injuries and fires. Scugog Council has approved a grant of up to $30,000 to help restore the historic building at 179–191 Queen Street in downtown Port Perry. The funding will support repairs to the building’s brick façade and other heritage features to preserve its historic character and address structural concerns. The restoration is expected to be completed in 2026, with work planned to reduce disruptions during the busy summer tourism season.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will continue working with the United States and Mexico to update the CUSMA trade agreement but will not accept a deal that is not in Canada’s best interest. His comments come ahead of the July 1 deadline for the three countries to decide whether to renew or review the trade pact. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre agreed Canada needs a strong deal but said the government should reach an agreement more quickly.
