Canadians are marking the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday, a day that celebrates the cultures, traditions and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Each year the event is held on the summer solstice, a time of cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous groups. Communities across the country held events and celebrations to recognize Indigenous heritage and achievements.
Scugog is expected to receive $1.13 million from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) in 2026, up slightly from the $1.106 million it received in 2025. The township has also secured a new five-year agreement with OLG that is expected to bring in more than $5.5 million starting in 2027. Council is expected to approve the agreement on June 22.
The federal government has introduced a temporary 10 per cent tariff on most imported canned vegetables to help support Canadian growers and food processors. The tariff will stay in place for up to 200 days while officials investigate whether increased imports are hurting the domestic industry. Imports from the United States are exempt, and experts say the move is not expected to raise grocery prices in the short term.
