Seniors Month will be celebrated in Georgina with three barbecue events in Keswick, Sutton and Pefferlaw throughout June. The first event takes place June 5 at Club 55 Keswick and features a barbecue lunch prepared by Town council and staff, live music, and a silent auction. Additional celebrations will be held June 25 in Sutton and June 30 in Pefferlaw, with tickets available in advance through local Club 55 locations and the Town of Georgina.
Georgina is recognizing National AccessAbility Week by highlighting the importance of creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome and can fully participate in community life. The town continues to improve accessibility in parks, beaches and recreation areas through features such as wheelchair-friendly pathways, adaptive beach equipment and accessible washrooms. Residents are also encouraged to wear red on June 3 for Red Shirt Day to celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities and show support for accessibility and inclusion.
York Region is asking the federal and provincial governments for more funding and support to help meet the needs of its growing seniors population. The region wants improvements in areas such as health care, housing, community services and access to technology for older adults. Officials say progress has been made through the region’s seniors plan, but more help is needed as the number of seniors continues to rise.
