Ontario confirms $200 rebates for residents, MP pushes Bradford Bypass study, and Canada Post workers vote to strike.

Transcript

A York Region MP has presented a petition at the federal level that would ask the Liberal Government to launch a study into the impacts that the Bradford Bypass would have on the local environment. This comes on the heels of the Provincial Government passing new legislation to speed up the construction of the bypass. According to Leah Taylor-Roy who represents Aurora Oak Ridge’s Richmond Hill, the Provincial Government has failed to study the impacts that the 16-kilometre highway would have on the East and West Holland Rivers. The bypass would cross both rivers connecting the 404 in East Gwillimbury to the 400 in Bradford.

The Ontario Government will be sending out $200 checks to everyone in the province that pays taxes. The announcement was made yesterday by Premier Doug Ford during his fall economic statement. Ford also said that you can receive an additional $200 for every eligible child, meaning a family of four could see up to $800. Ford would not commit to an exact date as to when these rebates would be going out, but he did say that they would be going out sometime in the new year. To be eligible for the provincial rebate, you must be a resident of Ontario 18 years or older by the end of 2023 and have filed your federal income tax by the end of 2024. Anyone that is legally bankrupt will unfortunately not be eligible for the rebate.

Grandma might not get your Christmas card in the mail this year. Canada Post workers across the country voted in favour of a strike with the holiday season upon us. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers made a statement on Monday saying that there has been no progress made on a new deal, despite being at the bargaining table for almost a year. The biggest issue for the union remains higher wages and better working conditions. If no agreement can be reached, then the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will be in legal position to strike as of November 3rd.
