EQAO results show Georgina schools below average, LCBO faces Ontario-made bag dispute, and Bank of Canada slashes rate by half a point.

Transcript

The provincial government has released results from the 23-24 EQAO test. Most of the public schools in Georgina failed to meet level 3 of the provincial standardized math test. 69% of grade 9 students in the York Regional District School Board scored above average on the test. Only 21% of students at Sutton District High School were above average, while 34% of students scored higher than average at Keswick High School. The result of the EQAO test does not affect a student’s report card and is designed to provide the province with a snapshot of where students are academically.

Paper bags have not yet returned to LCBOs across the province, after the Crown Corporation announced back in 2023 that they would be phasing out paper bags completely. A year later, the provincial government ordered the LCBO to reverse that decision. Now the government has again stepped in with direction for the LCBO, ordering them to use paper bags that are made in Ontario instead of the ones that are made in Quebec that the LCBO has decided to use. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that his government has made it a priority to champion Ontario-made products, especially in public procurements.

As expected, the Bank of Canada was aggressive yesterday cutting its key interest rates by half a percent, something that they haven’t done since March of 2020. Going into the day, the bank’s key interest rate sat at 4.25% and now sits at 3.75%. At his press conference yesterday, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said that the bank took the aggressive step because inflation is back around 2% and they want to keep it there. Macklem expects inflation to stay around the 2% mark in October and suggested that Canadians will see more rate cuts in the future. The next time the Bank of Canada will make an announcement on its rates will be December 11th
