There’s still no firm date on when the provincial government will break ground on a phosphorus recycling plant that will help clean up Lake Simcoe. The Holland Marsh Phosphorus plant would reduce the lake’s phosphorus levels by nearly 5 tonnes a year. Local politicians like Georgina Ward 3 Councillor Dave Neeson have been advocating for the health of Lake Simcoe. The good news is that even though no date has been set on the project,
the Ontario Clean Water Agency is working to get the project finalized, and hopefully a date will be announced soon. It was a busy day at Queen’s Park yesterday, as provincial politicians were back from their 19-week summer holiday. One of the biggest announcements came from Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce, who said he will be introducing new legislation that will make it easier and more affordable for new homes and businesses to connect to the electrical grid.
According to Lecce, the current rules make it slow and expensive to connect to the grid, which drives up the cost for home buyers and deters home building. Many economists are calling on the Bank of Canada to be aggressive with their rate cuts when they make their announcement tomorrow. Right now, key interest rates for the Bank of Canada sit at 4.25% after a series of rate cuts in the summer. With inflation falling to 1.6%, economists are saying that the central bank needs to be more aggressive and cut rates half a percentage, not just a quarter of a point, that we have seen from the Bank of Canada over the last few months.
